The Ruda Herb--An Ancient Herb with Modern Uses
The ruda herb, also known as ruta or rue, is a hardy, evergreen plant that is native to southern Europe and northern Africa, particularly around the Mediterranean. Ruda herb has been used in traditional medicine for millennia, and found widespread use in ancient times as a menstruation inducing agent as well as an abortifacient. Ruda herb, like almost all other medically active substances, is dangerous if taken in large quantities or by people with certain medical conditions. Therefore, caution should always be taken when using Ruda herb.
Ruda herb was
widely used in ancient times as a treatment for certain feminine
disorders as well as to induce abortion. Ruda herb was also thought to
be repugnant to witches and, as such, was used as a repellent to avoid
evil influences. Today, ruda herb is used to treat a variety of
conditions. Ruda herb was used as early as the thirteenth century as a
treatment for hemorrhoids, gout, rheumatism, problems of the
circulatory and nervous system, poor eye sight, and a number of other
injuries and ailments. Ruda herb has a characteristically pungent and
bitter flavor, and, as such, is used as a flavoring ingredient in some
cooking, particularly the cuisine of Italy and Ethiopia.
